The tiny Hertfordshire hamlet of Wadesmill, on the north of the River Rib close to the village of Thundridge, was at one time a bustling hamlet. The Roman Road of Ermine Street, now the A10, ran through the village and this important link was used to great effect in the early part of the 1800s when Wadesmill held its own race meeting on Thursday 10th February 1831. The 4 mile steeplechase was contested on a course which began at Bigden on the outskirts of Wadesmill, and progressed to Musley Dellhole, near Ware. Mr A Judson, a resident of Ware, rode Brown George, but was easily defeated by Mr Farrow’s bay horse. There are no further records of racing taking place in the hamlet.
